Stop Incessant Strikes-Tony Obuh

Press Release

DSTG Permanent Secretary, Mr. Tony Obuh Advises Professionals to Stop Incessant Strikes

The Permanent Secretary, Government House and Protocol, Asaba  Mr. Tony Obuh have decried the effects of the insistent strike actions embarked upon by professional bodies especially medical doctors in the country on the economy and lives of the citizenry.

Mr. Obuh who stated this in Asaba at the send-forth ceremony for the 2013/2014 Batch A Corps members who served in the directorate said that Nigerians grow concerned whenever there is a strike threat especially by  medical professionals explaining that they had a responsibility to uphold the medical oath they took to protect lives rather than their personal interest.

His words “Nigerians become worried anytime they hear that there is a threat of strike because medical professionals who have taken oath to protect lives abandon those lives for personal issues. We continue to pray to God that one day a way will be found to persuade medical practitioners to place lives of patients far above their own personal wishes and desires”.

Mr. Obuh harped on the need for proper dialogue between government and medical practitioners explaining that no responsible government would shirk its responsibilities of providing conducive environment for its workforce.

Continuing “If for any reason medical practitioners have need to complain and it is properly articulated to the government, I believe that the government will listen and attend to that need as much as possible and within the limits of its resources”, he said.

The Permanent Secretary called on youths to be passionate about their chosen career  as that was the only way to achieve success and job satisfaction.

He commended the youth corper Dr. (Mrs.) Henrietta Edebaetu for her exceptional service to the directorate and advised her to allow every decision she would undertake in her profession to be guided by the oath she has taken as a medical practitioner to protect lives.

Responding briefly Dr. Mrs. Henrietta Edebaetu commended the staff of Government House and Protocol for their warm and friendliness during her service year.

Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of gifts by the Permanent Secretary.

Ogeah Release on Delta Beyond Oil

Press Release

Why Uduaghan's Delta Beyond Oil initiative is gaining global acclaim - Ogeah
With the global drive towards green economy and the need to de-emphasize wholesale reliance on the exploitation of natural deposits, the initiative by Delta State government to adopt a holistic approach to development has become a template not just for the rest of the country but beyond.
Known as Delta Beyond Oil, it is an initiative enunciated by Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, governor of the state, to effect a paradigm shift from the nearly 100 percent reliance on revenue from crude oil in driving the state's economy. Its aim is to harness other resources in the state to create a vibrant economy away from oil which is a finite resource.
This was stated by the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Chike Ogeah. Speaking at weekend on Channels Television's Sunrise programme, he said the areas of emphasis in weaning Delta State from dependence on oil are agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), developing other natural resources, including solid minerals, developing the huge manpower base, and creating a clement environment for investment and private enterprise to thrive.
"The vision entails the development of a strong infrastructural base viz modern roads, efficient water transportation, efficient healthcare system, a world class educational system.
Delta Beyond Oil is not a physical structure in terms of a building but an enduring vision to prepare the state for the inevitable drying up of hydro-carbon deposits. In effect, the vision does not come with any cost.
"The vision recognises the fact that despite a relatively significant revenue from oil, Delta is faced with huge challenges, especially in the cost of developing critical infrastructure due to its tough terrain", Ogeah stated.
"The game changing initiative and the accomplishments recorded so far attracted a medley of recognitions and awards by reputable local and international media houses and other  organizations," the commissioner said.
Among the awards recently conferred on Dr. Uduaghan are the Man of the Year 2013 by three mainstream newspapers, including The Sun, Vanguard, Leadership and Nigerian Pilot. From Dublin, Republic of Ireland, came the International Outstanding  Leadership Award by  Metro Eireann, the country's multi-cultural newspaper.
On the successful kidney transplant accomplished at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, on Monday, January 13, 2014, he said the stage is now set for the state to become Nigeria’s medical tourism destination.
The kidney transplant, the first of its kind in the country, followed the successful knee cap and hip replacement surgeries earlier undertaken in the hospital last year.
Ogeah said the success of the surgery signals the advent of more complex operations to be undertaken at the hospital that will ultimately make DELSUTH a centre for medical excellence and tourism in Nigeria.
He said the pioneering surgeries at the hospital demonstrate Dr. Uduaghan’s visionary leadership and unique approach to healthcare in the country, noting that Delta remains the only state with a comprehensive health care programme.
“Delta State is the only place where pregnant women enjoy comprehensive free healthcare coverage and free delivery, including free caesarean section. In addition to that, every new born baby enjoys free medical care until five years of age. This is unprecedented and largely explains why Delta State by far has the lowest maternal death rate”, Ogeah said.
When the Uduaghan administration came into office in 2007, the death rate per 100,000 births was over 500. However, by 2013, the figure had dropped to about 250 deaths per 100,000 births, giving Delta State by far the best record in the country.
He identified employment generation and support for small scale entrepreneurship as a critical area where tremendous progress has been made. According to Ogeah, the governor created the Directorate of Poverty Alleviation, a special purpose vehicle to drive the small and micro-credit scheme in collaboration with the Bank of Industry under an arrangement that shielded it from the vagaries of officialdom.
"At the last count, over 100,000 people, mainly women and the younger generation, have benefited from the scheme. In fact, some products, especially processed foods, are now being exported worldwide," Ogeah said.
Alongside the mega projects some of which are the Asaba International Airport, the Theme Park at Oleru, Warri Industrial Business Park, the 156-kilometer Asaba-Ughelli dual carriage way that links the Warri business axis with the largest market in sub-saharan Africa in Onitsha, Anambra State and the medical centres of excellence, Ogeah said Uduaghan had laid the foundation for the emergence of Delta State as a model economic giant.

“Uduaghan has set the pace whereby wealthy Nigerians will no longer have cause to travel abroad for even complex medical situations. Rather, we are the point where people from other countries will be coming to Delta State in search of specialist medical care. That is what medical tourism is all about and DELSUTH is leading the way”, Ogeah said.
The commissioner said the DELSUTH project involves not just the acquisition and installation of world class medical facilities but in the development of well trained manpower to undertaken surgeries hitherto obtainable only in developed countries.
Uduaghan, himself an accomplished medical doctor who was part of the team that successfully undertook the kidney transplant, had facilitated a five-year partnership between DELSUTH and UT South-Western Medical Centre, Dallas, the United States of America to build infrastructure and human capacity.
Two years ago, the Delta State Government started subsidizing dialysis of kidney patients in DELSUTH and progressively brought the cost down from N20,000 to N5,000 applicable only to patients of Delta State origin.

Over N20bn to be invested in Power Companies by Delta State Government.

Emmanuel Uduaghan

Press Briefing

The sum of N4.5 billion is to be invested in some of the newly privatized electricity generating and distribution companies in the country by the Delta State Government.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Power and Energy, Mr. Charles Emetulu during a recent press briefing at Asaba, the State capital.

Emetulu said that N15.7 billion earlier contributed by the State Government towards the development of power supply infrastructure in the country has become equity contribution for Delta State.

He listed Benin Power Distribution Company, Sapele Power Generating Company and Ughelli Generating Company, as the companies where the State bought some equities.

The Commissioner said that the State spent N48.4 billion on 391 power supply projects from 2007 and 2013.

He added that N29.7 billion was spent on 95 power projects between 2011 and 2013.

According to him, Government is not a good manager of investments, but the State Government ventured into acquiring equities in power companies to protect the interest of the rural communities.

He said, “With the private sector taking over the generation and distribution of electricity in the country, we should all look forward for an upward review of tariffs”.

He also said that “This is why the State Government has invested the sum of N4.5 billion as equity in the power generating and distribution companies in Benin, Sapele and Ughelli. Government will plough back its profits on investment to ensure safety nets for those in the rural communities who may not be able to pay for this product.”

Emetulu Stated  that from May 2011 to November 2013, the State Government acquired and distributed over 2000 transformers and other accessories to various communities to improve power supply in the State.

He told pressmen that the State Government planned to discuss with the new owners of the power infrastructure on how the State would benefit from the facilities located in the State.

The Commissioner assured that the State Independent Power Project (IPP) at Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, would be completed before the end of 2015.

He added that the State would partner with the private sector to run the plant.

Emetulu said the State was also partnering with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the Phillips Company to build renewable energy sources in Delta.

The Commissioner said the plan was to ensure power supply to the rural areas of the state, especially the riverine communities.

The People Investment

Answer to the Question: (Do you leave people better than you found them?)

While i was reading John Mason's book, "Why ask Why", i saw wisdom in the answer he gave to the question "Do you leave people better than you found them?". I think this answer can help some other people to get answer to their question too.

One of the most exciting decisions you can make is to be on the lookout for opportunities to invest in others.

For me, this has been one of the most powerful principles of momentum I’ve implemented in my life. About ten years ago, I remember driving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, from St. Louis, Missouri with my family. I was listening to a Zig Zaglar tape and on this tape he said, “You'll always have everything you want in life if you’ll help enough other people get what they want.”

When I heard this statement, literally, something went off inside of me, and I said out loud, “I’m going to do it.” That decision to look for ways to help others, to invest in them, changed my life.

“There are three keys to more abundant living: caring about others, daring for others and sharing with others” (William Ward). Assign yourself the purpose of making others happy and successful. People have a way of becoming what you encourage them to be.

There are two types of people in the world: those who come into a room and say, “Here I am!” and those who come in and say, “Ah, there you are!” Do this: “If you cannot win, make the one ahead of you break the record” (Jan McKeithen). By JOHN MASON (Author).

Invest in Others. It pays great dividends
